CANON: Tales of Berseria
NAME: Magillanica Lou Mayvin, otherwise known as just "Magilou"
AGE: Physically is 14, is actually 29
CANON: Tales of Berseria
CANON HISTORY: Since there is no wiki entry which summarizes her full history, I hope that linking to this summary of her backstory that draws from japan-only materials and the game itself will suffice. But as for the game itself, here's a wiki link to the plot.
CANON PERSONALITY: Magilou is someone who wears a mask constantly. Her character is hidden in nuances, in subtle clues beneath a well-crafted mask. She has a fondness for wordplay and flowery language, and tends to have some sort of joking comment to add about everything. She is outwardly quite arrogant in her abilities as a “Witch”, even despite her looking like a young girl. She is incredibly eccentric and has some very outlandish thoughts and ideas, which she does not hesitate to state and are often commented on by the party.
Of course, she is also quite the jokester. She fabricates stories for the sake of leading on others. She pokes at people’s weak points when exposed. She does whatever she can to fuck with people for her own amusement, and relishes in putting on a show. She is constantly dramatic to the point of no longer being able to be taken seriously, and either entertaining or annoying those around her. Magilou makes herself, in a way, the biggest joke of all. She both makes her opinions incredibly public, and yet gives away nothing of her true views at all. Compulsive lying and constant showmanship are Magilou’s two most displayed aspects of herself.
She however, has far more going on underneath the surface than she’s willing to reveal. She holds a very jaded viewpoint on humanity. No matter what, Magilou always expects the worst from people, and she is quick to hone in on their flaws to validate this. She doesn’t really see any kindness towards her as being genuine. Much of her cheeriness and arrogance is simply a mask. A cheerful and comedic persona to hide up all the negative feelings beneath.
She is actually quite perceptive, and has a lot of information from her time as an Exorcist she never mentions. In fact, Magilou never mentions her past nor her informed position unless it is absolutely necessary. This is why she never mentions trying to stop the Scarlet Night, or anything about her seven years with Grim. It was not something they needed to know about, so she kept it to herself. Even if it would have been something that would have liked to know.
She is apathetic, though it is more of a forced apathy. A forced detachment from the events and circumstances around her, brought on by her upbringing and self-image. For while she still hates herself, she still considers a Mayvin. She is excommunicated, and thus has more freedom, but she still bears the name. And so long as she is a Mayvin, she must observe the world. It also gives her a convenient excuse to keep herself distant, to avoid getting close to others and forming bonds only for them to be ripped away.
She goes along with others and their far stronger passions, ultimately being more of a passive kind of person due to her apathy. Simply observing the actions of others and potentially intervening if she is required to. Of course, at some point along the game, she does herself get personally invested, and the line blurs between her role and her true self acting in the manner she does.
Of course, while she is emotionally detached from things, that also doesn’t necessarily make her logical. She has come to despise Melchior's twisted principles(though not actually the man himself) and would usually therefore be pushed more towards the side of emotion, but yet Magilou herself does not wish to deal with emotions. So she instead simply takes the action that goes in contrast to both principles, that keeps her from showing her true emotions while also not being the path of reason she hates. And thus her behavior can often be rather, erratic because of it. In a way, Magilou herself is the perfect fence sitter. She stands in some odd middle ground between both emotion and reason, and even by the end of the game she never chooses a side. While before, she hated that fact, that neutrality, and throughout most of the game she keeps that up, it is a major piece of her development to come to embrace it. To come to accept the fact that maybe, in all of this, she can be happy by not choosing a side.
For indeed, Magilou thinks that life is about the journey. That life is suffering and hardship, and that all people can do is humans is push through that hardship for the sake of pursuing some sort of success. She is the sort of person who can drive themselves forward without much of a clear cut goal beyond vague pretenses, who can keep living not out of passion, but out of the journey from who you are now towards a far off goal. Magilou just has no idea what to
Now, as for her development over the game, it relates to those passions of others. Magilou is influenced heavily by Velvet’s passion. By her determination. She watches as Velvet suffers horribly many things that remind her of that which broke her. And Magilou begins to rethink her idea. Maybe, perhaps, apathy is not the solution. That rather than distancing herself, she should allow herself to actively be involved with them. To fight, to not simply fulfill her role but to do what she has to to protect humanity directly. That is what brings her truly close to the group, and lets her connect with them. They become her family, essentially.
But in the end, Magilou does end up getting a new journey of her own to endlessly follow after the game’s conclusion. The path of a Mayvin, of a Storyteller. With Melchior gone, it is only after the game itself where she truly assumes the title. For her actions with Velvet however, she was given a punishment. For she breached her role, overstepped her own bounds, not for anything personal but because she grew to care about the party. That, in a way, perfectly encapsulates how Magilou changed. From an apathetic Mayvin simply fulfilling her duties and trying to keep herself entertained, to Magilou, the one who fights alongside the Lord of Calamity.
SKILLS/ABILITIES: Magilou, in Berseria, is a unique case in many ways. First, she was naturally born with high resonance, the ability to see Malakhim and Daemons before the Advent and Opening, which is an incredibly a rare trait. It is what made her Melchior take her in as his pupil. She has a pact with Bienfu, which brings out her own innate magical power. This is exceptional, as humans shouldn't be able to use magic on their own. Bienfu interfaces with Magilou's weapon, a set of paper talismans called Guardians. That is actually the source of most of the magic she performs in game, though a lot of it definitely stems from her own talents and power, not merely just Bienfu.
She has a certain rare prodigal talent when it comes to scholarly manners. By the time she was 14, she was already beginning to surpass her own teacher. She is a genius, there is no discounting that fact, and such intelligence has been evident with her even from a young age. She also has a talent when it comes to performance and deception, from her time as a circus performer. It is this which allows her to so easily mask her own emotions.
Magilou is under the effects of two Oaths. Oaths which bind her in certain ways, and breaking results in death. The first oath exchanges her ability to age for magical and spiritual power, causing her body to physically be 14. The second, forced on her as the price for breaking her status as Observer, is to never discuss the events of her journey with Velvet, in exchange for Immortality.
She also possesses the Break Soul, Spell Absorber. It is a technique which allows her to absorb and nullify the magic of others, and cast various artes in retaliation varying based on how much or what she has absorbed.

CHARACTER: AU SECTION
AU NAME: Maggie Lou Mayvin
AU AGE: 29
PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES: Magilou is mostly the same as her canon self, physically. She had perfectly human hair and eye colors after all. She lacks her elf ears, and looks older due to the lack of her oath, though I do imagine people frequently mistaking her for being younger than she actually is(not like too young but she’s just one of those types who just looks like 5 years younger than they actually are).

AU HISTORY:
* So, Magilou’s parents gave her up for adoption shortly after she was born. So essentially, she’s an orphan. She makes a lot of orphan jokes to whoever knows about it.
* She was adopted and raised by her father, an influential and powerful businessman who had high expectations for her. He placed a lot of pressure on her to do well in school and hopefully go into business and reach level of success much like himself. She didn't resent this, even though she often found the work he expected of her a tiresome bore. For most of her childhood she was a social outcast and very much a bookworm. Girl read anything she could get her hands on. So while she basically had no friends, she didn't consciously mind it that much, even despite its subconscious effects, instead immersing herself in literature and studying to live up to her father's expectations. It gave her a sense of some sort of happiness, and caused her to begin actively alienating and distancing herself from other people.
* When she was around 11, she began getting into the work of Carl Gustav Jung, and it quickly became a major subject of fascination after she finished Symbols of Transformation. it is this which sparked a lifelong interest in the metaphysical and in the elements of fiction within her.
* She had a massive falling out with her father about her pursuing her own passions compared to his expectations for her shortly after she graduated high school at 16.
* She managed to actually run a successful theater career. While she was unable to find any success as an actress, she did find a good deal of it as a playwright. While she has no mainstream attention for the most part, her work definitely has a large cult following. She usually remains distant from her fanbase though, and has gained a reputation as a reclusive, absolute troll of a creator. Which is mostly accurate.
* She began getting into the 4chan community around 2009, so she's somewhat of an oldfag, all things considered.
* At 25 she moved to Recolle. She frankly was done with her life in the limelight. It didn't suit her, frankly, and so her vanishing act got pulled, although that didn't actually mean she was retiring fully. It was around this time she started up her youtube channel.
* Currently runs a theater troupe and a youtube channel. The theater troupe was established around a year after she moved to Recolle as a way to continue her own ventures, and also actually give her an excuse to act.
AU PERSONALITY: First, let us start with the obvious. Magilou no longer refers to herself as a “Great Witch.” Really, she has no reason to, what with the absence of magic in a real world setting. She is still outwardly arrogant and flamboyant, but her jokes now also involve her very public obsession with meme culture. While she mostly displays it online, it is most definitely something Magilou has fully immersed herself in. Still, even without her powers, she still was an outcast, and she still felt the expectations of her father, so in the end similar things happened for different reasons, producing similar, yet different effects.
She hasn’t had the same development she has in the game, and thus, she still has overall very low self-esteem, but it manifests quite differently. Her goal, her driving factor to keep living however, is different than in Berseria. It is to speak and see clearly, and to have others listen in turn. To allow her ideas to flourish in this world, with true honesty and reason. After all, she has no reason to hate, well, reason here, and thus she has almost semi-embraced it.
“Rational chaos”, that is the existence that Magilou lives in. A contradictory one, and one she hates for that contradiction, but one she lives nonetheless and one she still hasn’t quite sorted out. It is still a contradiction that lies are her core, yet it is one different in nature. She will constantly act in ways that may hinder herself for the sake of mere entertainment and yet can be ruthlessly pragmatic in the pursuit of self-benefit the next minute. She has a pattern to herself, don’t get me wrong, it is simply an idiosyncratic and contradictory pattern from idiosyncratic logic. A “web of contradictions held together with a false logic” is an accurate way of putting it.
Magilou still has her major trust issues, though for different reasons here. For most of her childhood she was unable to form any real close relationships with people, and thus she just essentially gave up on social interaction. On ever trusting others, on ever having friends. Though over time, these feelings have begun to decrease, this is definitely her prevailing attitude. She is still also apathetic and disconnected, however. Though do note she is actually capable of trusting people here, in comparison to how she is in Berseria.
So essentially, Magilou still has many of her issues, but here they are more scaled back or different in nature at a deeper level. Also she has memeing as her coping mechanism now.

It was funny how much of life was spent waiting. In Magilou's case, this was waiting for a youtube video to be uploaded. It was a beautiful, yet sweltering day, the perfect weather to be with friends, heading to the mall to try and escape the heat or something. But she was cooped up in her apartment, and now she was distracting herself by going on /pol/ and trying to figure out one thing. Something that had been biting at her ever since that mysterious app calling itself Retrospec had appeared on her phone.
Just what was all of this about?
This entire Retrospec thing was a complicated issue for Magilou, in a manner in which she didn’t think others were realizing. She had always tried to identify reason in things. Whether in people, events, stories, reasons underlined everything and existed everywhere. And Retrospec thus, had to have one for what was going on.. She just knew it. All of these changes couldn’t just be random.
But in the end, what did it matter? What could she, or anyone, really do about it? She wasn’t exactly sure, and so she wasn’t sure how much she honestly should invest herself in something so uncertain. But yet, there was an urge inside of her. An urge to make something of use of herself in all of this utter, logic-defying insanity.
And yet what was the cost of that?
Putting herself into such an unsure situation, where she might not even change anything, where she could put in effort without any returns… well, it was a gamble. However, there was one major appeal to it. One she couldn’t fully discount. And that was the fact that such a thing would be incredibly fun. And well, Magilou really had a hard time resisting entertainment. But throwing your hat into the ring with a full risk of being torn to pieces for doing so was a gamble. But what was life without risks?
She looked out the window, at the sky that should have been blue but yet was now stained grey. She didn't think she could change that sky. In the end, she was one small, likely insignificant person in the grand equation of the cosmos. And she, along with everyone else, was up against a powerful, reality warping force. Though, whether the force was malicious or not was debatable, but even so, the were still calling it the enemy. So she could join in with the fight but... well, that had never exactly been her thing anyways.
Thus, she decided. In all of this madness, in all of this chaos, the best route was to try and create some sort of order for herself. Make something comprehensible. Whether that required her to gain more information, or for her to simply try and create some level of logic about this, and even if that logic would actually make any logical sense to anyone besides her, she didn't really know.
But she had to take some sort of first step, right?

[Magilou was never usually invited to parties. She knew the reason why, of course, but that was irrelevant to her. She had overheard a couple of her troupe members discussing a particular event being held at a luxurious venue in the Tisse district. it was invite-only, of course, but that hadn't stopped Magilou from taking advantage of an unlocked kitchen door to sneak in anyways, managing to avoid detection. And thus here she was, at an event she had no business attending and she knew she would eventually be found out for crashing, if anyone actually noticed she was here. But rather than simply wait for herself to be noticed, she figured it was better to catch everyone's attention herself. And she knew just the way.]
[There was a stage on the far end of the room, with a microphone positioned on a stand. It didn't have a chord, which was good for her purposes. Currently, no one was on that stage, and so she began to make a beeline for it. She marched up on it, and no one really noticed. She cleared her throat into it, and began to speak.]
"So, have you all been having a nice night? Well, presumably you have." [The gaze of everyone in the room fell upon her now, and most of them were surprised. The majority of people didn't recognize her, but she saw a few familiar faces sprinkled about, and she saw the dawning realization of just what exactly she was doing upon them. A mischievous smile came onto her face. She removed the mic from it's stand, and began to walk towards the other side of the stage and the steps downwards.]
"Now, let me tell you a little story." [She started walking down the steps as she continued, and a slight buzz was beginning to form at who the mysterious performer was. She could see the hosts of the party utterly appalled by this move, and she began to pick up her pace slightly.] "The time is around a quarter of a century ago, somewhere in the middle east. There was a man who himself was similar to many others. He had suffered terribly, but yet had not fallen into the hold of resentment as so many others did. No, he wished to solve the world's troubles, and prevent the spread of such suffering. But of course, as you all well know, that is a nigh impossible task. So alas, his desire could not be acted upon. But, in a sudden revelation, it came to him! In order to be able to save the world, he needed to be able to see all possible ways to do so. Surely, there had to be a way, even if that way was currently inconceivable to the mind of a human. But to be able to do such a thing, he needed to gain omniscience, which should have been impossible."
[She had begun weaving her way through the room now, and she knew she was causing a stir, just as she had intended. She wasn't able to get the same clear view of everyone she had from the stage, but that was okay. She didn't need it at this point, as she headed over towards the other side of the room.] "Yet he was not one to simply give up in the face of impossible odds. For years, the man worked to try and find a method of achieving this. His friends thought he had gone mad, he neglected his family, all of his time went towards this endeavor. And after years of toiling, of blood, sweat, and tears, he pulled it off. He created a device which would allow him to transcend humanity, and gain knowledge of everything within the universe. He eagerly used it, ready to find the answers he had sought for so long.
"But by becoming omniscient, he therefore was unable to act. For as he could see the entire future, he was unable to fight it. For if you can know everything, you can know the outcomes of every choice, including your own. So the man became unable to change the future, to save the world, for as he gained his power, there was a single revelation that first came to him." [She now stood in the doorway of the room, and she looked over the room one last time, giving an intense stare to everyone in her field of vision as she uttered the final words of her little tale.]
"'No matter how much you fight, this world will definitely come to an end.'" [She then dropped the mic, turned away from everyone, and ran. She dashed for the door, swinging it open widely and making sure she gone as quickly as possible. She didn't even stop to look at whoever was around, only barely registering that there were even people there. She knew she had needed to leave, but rather than quietly slipping away, she had chosen to make a scene of it. It had served as a distraction for her getaway, and as she got in her car, she felt satisfied with herself. She would likely suffer the consequences for this later, but so be it. She had put on a nice little bit of improv, but even so, all this had done was reaffirm one thing. This sort of thing was the reason why she never was invited to parties.]

SAMPLE 2<
